Anthropic is SpaceX's largest customer, The Next Web reports, citing Bloomberg
The AI company made up about 34.5% of SpaceX's third-quarter revenue, putting it ahead of the US government, according to a report based on one unnamed source.
Anthropic is SpaceX's largest customer and accounted for more than a third of the company's third-quarter revenue, according to The Next Web, citing Bloomberg. Bloomberg based its report on a person familiar with the matter.
SpaceX said in a filing last week that about 34.5% of its quarterly revenue came from a single client. The filing did not name the client and called it only "Customer B." It described this customer as a buyer of computing power from SpaceX's AI unit, which is now called Super Intelligence.
If the report is accurate, Anthropic is now a bigger customer for SpaceX than the US government. The Next Web described the government as SpaceX's main source of income for a long time.
According to The Next Web, Anthropic rents computing power at SpaceX's data centres in Memphis, Tennessee. The outlet said Anthropic's IPO filing shows it could spend up to $120.5B under contracts that run to 2029. That works out to about $3.1B a month from December.
The deal matters because of how much SpaceX now depends on one client. The Next Web reported that Anthropic can cancel with 90 days' notice after early 2027, which leaves SpaceX heavily exposed. The AI unit made a profit for the first time last quarter, and SpaceX's revenue rose 161%, the outlet said.
The report comes as lenders pull back from neoclouds, the firms that rent out AI computing. Musk has argued that SpaceX is safer than those companies because it also has its Starlink and launch businesses. He wrote on X:
“"Debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn't have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers."”Musk, in a post on X
Anthropic is not SpaceX's only computing customer. The Next Web reported that Google also rents computing power from SpaceX and pays about $920M a month.
Several things are still unclear. Neither company has confirmed that Anthropic is "Customer B." Bloomberg said Anthropic declined to comment and SpaceX did not respond. The identification rests on one unnamed person.
The $120.5B figure is a maximum. The report does not say how much Anthropic will actually spend, and it does not say whether Anthropic plans to use its option to cancel after early 2027. It also does not say what SpaceX would do with the capacity if the contracts ended.
This story rests on one report, from The Next Web, which in turn relies on Bloomberg's reporting.
